So, I’m finally getting around to learning Ruby. (Thanks, I’m pretty excited myself.) While following Dan Benjamin’s excellent Building Ruby, Rails, LightTPD, and MySQL on Tiger over at HiveLogic, I encountered the following error:
$ sudo gem install rails –include-dependencies
Bulk updating Gem source index for: http://gems.rubyforge.org
ERROR: While executing gem … (Gem::GemNotFoundException)

I have this Alienware laptop for sale. It’s a piece of crap and I know it. I lay it out plainly and clearly. Nobody in their right mind would bid on this without knowing what they’re getting into. I put it up on eBay and set a reserve price of $200.00. [...]
I’m posting this because I’m sick of looking it up. The Yojimbo database is located at /Users/account name/Library/Application Support/Yojimbo/Database.sqlite.

Over at the Dilbert Blog, Scott Adams makes this observation:
You need a healthy ego to endure the abuse that comes with any sort of success. The trick is to think of your ego as your goofy best friend who lends moral support but doesn’t know shit.
That’s sound advice regardless of what you’re doing.
Although I don’t really care too much for Dave Winer, he has a few ideas I agree with it. In particular, we agree on the subject of blog comments. This article sums it up quite nicely.
The way to give people freedom of expression is to give them a quiet place to post their [...]
I picked up Yummy FTP as part of a MacHeist freebie. That meant that I could use that version — and that version only — forever, free of charge. If I wanted to upgrade, it’d cost me $10. For the longest time, I refrained from upgrading because it just worked.
I’ve tried several [...]

I stumbled upon Pixelmater today and all I can say is … wow. This thing looks fantastic. They’re scheduled to release a beta sometime this month and I cannot wait. It’s a gorgeous app. If it works half as good as it looks, it’ll be awesome.

Here’s how to change the default application for opening a given extension in OS X. We’ll use PDFs as an example. The default in OS X is to use Preview. In the following, I’ll show you how to open all PDFs with Skim.

I haven’t seen much written about this, but Tyson Tune has released an iPhone interface to iGTD, Bartek Bargiel’s excellent Getting Things Done application for the Mac. As I recently mentioned, I don’t really use the GTD methodology but iGTD fits the way I work very nicely. I don’t currently have an iPhone, [...]

I’ve run into a situation where my Open With … command is filled with several duplicates. TextMate, for example, will appear in the list around 15 times. As will several other programs. Some only appear once, others appear multiple times. After confirming that I didn’t have multiple installations of the same [...]

Nobody needs to tell my wife, but I’ve recently made a few software purchases. First is Daniel Jalkut’s (red sweater software’s) awesome FastScripts. I’ve been meaning to purchase this for a long time, but Gruber’s recent Non-Top-Posting Reply Scripts for Apple Mail sealed the deal. Mail’s top-posting has bugged me since the [...]

Um … no.
Update: Look, I like Veteran Of The Psychic Wars. In my opinion it’s the best B.O.C. has ever done. I have no problem with B.O.C. I like a lot of their stuff. But they’re nothing like Apocalytica. It’s a crap recommendation.

I just did what I said I’d never do. I subscribed to dotMac. Yeah, yeah. I know. I have my own server, I can can replicate 90% of the functionality for free, Google Calendars, etc. None of it matters because I’m addicted to iGTD and it only syncs via dotMac. [...]
